Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 544156968d The Courier outbox filters as you type again, and a wide footer keeps Esc
Typing narrows the outbox again, and its footer says so. With the scroll
atom, the footer of an entry row is wider than 72 cells, which JP
accepted. The footer line no longer cuts a hint that is too wide at the
edge, which took Esc with it: it drops atoms instead, as the splash
already did. The outbox drops "Del delete" first.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 53ffb984cb The Courier outbox shows each message and pans instead of cutting
Each row now carries a third column, MESSAGE, after TARGET and TRIGGER
(or OUTCOME). Nothing is shortened to fit: the rows and their headers pan
together with ←→, and the footer says so while the table runs past the
edge. The outbox no longer filters as you type, which keeps the footer
within 72 cells.

A column header that pans now pins with its section heading, as a
header that does not pan always did.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 0b931e7cc4 The Courier outbox is a TARGET and TRIGGER table, and Enter opens the message
Each section of the outbox now has column headers: TARGET and TRIGGER for
waiting entries, TARGET and OUTCOME for finished ones. The rows no longer
show the message. Enter on a waiting entry opens it to edit (the courier
holds the entry while the prompt is open, so the old text cannot go out
meanwhile), and Enter on a finished one shows it. Del deletes an entry
after a red confirm, and ^R sends a waiting entry now; on the PicoCalc
they ride F3 as Send, with Delete behind it. On a narrow screen a long
name gives cells to the trigger and breaks off on its crack.

The message field has the colours of the chat's compose line: a white
prompt mark and white text.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 f07bb9e1dd The ends of a route are origin and destination chips in four more places
The Messages list's preview draws its author as an origin chip (no colon: the
point says it) and its mentions as destination chips, as the transcript does.
The packet viewer's from rows close on the point and its to row opens on the
notch, around the via chain that already opens and closes on both. The live
feed's addressed subject is an origin chip and a destination chip facing each
other across one cell of page (widgets.route_ends): a seam would claim the two
are neighbours. A pair too wide for the lane cracks instead of eliding. The
courier's recipient is a destination chip, in the hue of its key while it
waits and muted once finished.

Arrow mode reads exactly as before everywhere. A lone hop there carries no
PATH_INK stamp, so a highlighted list row whitens it like any other name.

Each test docstring states the behaviour that the test proves, in the
simple present. No assertion message, test id, or other string literal
changed. Four statements now agree with the code: the Trace highlight
stays on the last row, a menu count, and two others.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 44e60c4054 Acks get the wait a flood needs, and a late one still counts
Only 24 of 144 direct messages and posts in the history were ever marked
delivered. Three faults, each fixed:

- The wait was the radio's own estimate times 1.2: about 5.7 s for a
flood, while a flooded round trip from a few hops out takes ten (a
room's answer from five hops landed at 10.1 s on hardware). It is now
the login's patience, the estimate stretched a quarter plus a round
trip sized to the route, about 15 s for a flood.
- An ack that landed after the wait was dropped. The radio pushes one
whenever it arrives, for any of its last eight sends, but nothing was
listening, so a delivered message stayed failed for good. The history
shows ACK and PATH packets heard seconds after messages recorded as
failed. The send now returns a Delivery carrying the ack code, and the
chat service keeps the last sixteen messages still waiting. A late ack
flips one to delivered, in history and in the message the chat screen
holds, and every code a retried message went out under counts.
- The Courier trusted the failure and sent the message again: a
duplicate for the recipient whenever the ack was only late. A late ack
  now marks the entry delivered.

The ack listener is also armed before the send rather than after it,
so a neighbour's ack quicker than the send's own return is not missed.
The debug log names how a message went out and the radio's own
round-trip time.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5.5 b6e7cd5c16 The handhelds are named for their variant: picocalc-lyra and cardputer-zero
M5Stack makes three Cardputers and only the Zero runs Linux; the PicoCalc
takes several cores and only the Luckfox Lyra runs MeshTerm. So the bare
names were ambiguous, and every reference to the two devices now carries
the variant: the --platform values and MESHTERM_PLATFORM, the Platform
constants (PICOCALC_LYRA, CARDPUTER_ZERO), their lane decks and every
screen's picocalc_lyra_lane / cardputer_zero_lane, the font inventories,
the lane chips' theme styles, the scripts/ folders, the two chrome test
files, and the docs and CLAUDE.md that name them.

There is no alias: --platform picocalc is refused with the three real
choices listed, rather than falling back to the desktop layout. The
PicoCalc is auto-detected from its device tree, so it needs nothing.
What names hardware or a user's data keeps its name: the PicoCalc
keyboard's input-device name, its battery's sysfs supply, and the serial
profile the Lyra setup script writes. .gitignore follows the firmware's
folder, and the changelog keeps the words each release used.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Fable 5.1 c9f5a71ce7 Every Python file names its licence with an SPDX identifier
Apache-2.0 does not require per-file headers, but a file lifted out of the tree carried no marking at all. One comment line, first (or right after a shebang), on every .py under meshterm/, tests/, packaging/ and scripts/, plus the extensionless SPI bridge; tests/test_spdx.py keeps a new file from landing without one.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 61dc9dc110 Every icon-led list measures its icon column, so no label starts a column early
The terminal draws some icons in one cell (↻ ⌨ 🗑 ✓ ✗ ⚠) and most emoji in two, so
a row written icon-plus-space started its words a column left of its siblings. The
fix kept landing one screen at a time. menus.align_icons now pads every icon in a
list out to the widest one, and menu_rows applies it itself, so a list built there
cannot misalign.

Hand-built lists are brought along: the courier outbox and entry actions, the
watchtower actions and rule popover, the record card's actions, the main menu's
Quit row and the device splash's action rows. The repeater admin's regression
test, dropped by a concurrent rewrite of its file, is restored.

tests/test_icon_alignment.py sweeps every gallery screen on both platforms and
fails, naming the rows and their start cells, when a list's icon-led rows start
their words in different cells.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 e3ae668f4a Give the person at the prompt back what a redirect never wanted
Five small things the seam left standing, each one a rule applied a step too
far or a question asked of the wrong flag.

ack and a tool's closing message go to stderr instead of being dropped. The
reason they were dropped was sound as far as it went — an acknowledgement is not
the answer, and `meshterm contacts > f` must catch only the answer — but stdout
is not the only stream. Someone watching a five-minute `config restore` gets the
setting-by-setting ✓ back, and the redirect still catches nothing extra.

tx-optimize asked --json whether it could prompt. That is a question about
output format, and it answered this one wrong in both directions: with the flag
a piped run failed cleanly, without it a scheduled run on a terminal sat waiting
for a password nobody was going to type. It now asks stdin — and asks it
properly on Windows, where NUL is a character device that isatty() calls a
terminal and getpass then reads the console directly and blocks forever. A
missing password is a usage error, since nothing was transmitted.

courier send on an id nobody has raised a device failure, which told a scheduled
sender to retry a typo. It is a bad argument: the outbox is a local file.

--mock alongside --port/--ble/--tcp used to let --mock win silently, so a
scheduled `--port COM7 --mock info` reported on a simulator while reading as
though it had reached the radio.

And stderr stops folding at 80 columns off a terminal, which is what made
`grep 'not already connected' errors.log` come back empty — the sentence was
there, with a newline through the middle of it.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 109fe7645d Move every command onto the seam, and give the plain face its own premise
Forty-nine leaf commands now state a Report instead of printing one, so --json
works on all of them at once rather than on the two that grew a branch for it.
The two hand-rolled JSON paths are gone: devices no longer builds a payload dict
of its own, and its empty scan exits 5 like the plain path always did rather than
0 — a rendering flag has no business moving the report.

The plain face changes premise along with it. It used to be a serialisation
format a person could squint at, and several of its rules existed only to make
splitting safe. Splitting is the machine face's job now, so:

- Names are bare. Alignment is the delimiter; the escaping under the quoting
stays, because nothing else stops a name a node broadcast from ending its own
  record.
- Times are ages. "Heard recently?" is the question a contacts listing is opened
to ask, and an ISO instant makes the reader do arithmetic to answer it.
--absolute puts the instants back; an appointment, the device clock and a live
capture's own column were never ages and still aren't.
- A route takes arrows and a path keeps its commas. The lexicon has always split
these and the output never did, so a route line looked pasteable into --path,
  which it is not.
- The listings gain what was cut for parser hygiene: contacts gets the HASH
--path takes and a LOCATION the model has always carried, preferences gets the
DESCRIPTION already written in its registry, and the two live streams get
pinned lanes — which is what let them have columns at all, and with them the
last call site for the quoting.
- The four written pages wrap at 72 instead of printing 600-cell paragraphs. It
is the one exception to "no wrapping", and the rule's own reason says why: a
paragraph has no fields to land under the wrong headings.

info keeps its keys and gains a gloss on the four readings nobody can hold in
their head (93784 (1d 2h)); it is the one key/value block with no set behind it,
so there is no round trip to protect. config show is untouched, deliberately.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 da05dd402f Give the CLI its own voice, meant for a pipe rather than an eye
The CLI had grown the menu's manners -- colour, boxes, section headings,
glyph columns, a closing check mark -- and every one of them is in the way
of the thing it is actually for. It now prints like a standard Unix
utility: plain text, no escape sequences at all, no frames, one record per
line, and nothing wrapped, so a long line runs off the right instead of
folding its fields onto a second one.

meshterm/ui/script.py is the whole vocabulary. Listings are an uppercase
header and space-aligned records; key/value blocks are sysctl's shape, and
a `get` prints the bare value alone. Names are quoted wherever they share a
line, because a name can hold a space or a comma and a bare one is not a
field. A route reads "Origin" (3d),"Relay" (f2),"Us" (a1) -- the hash
outside the quotes, our own node a hop like any other rather than a star,
since the hash is what carries the identity that colour carries on screen.
Times are absolute local ISO-8601 and "-" is the one token for absent.

The return value is now half the report: 0 ok, 1 failure, 2 usage, 3 no
device, 4 the device was reached and the operation failed, 5 nothing to
report. That last one is the point -- a command that ran fine and found
nothing prints nothing and says so in $?, so a script never has to count
output lines to tell an empty mesh from a full one. Errors and progress
moved to stderr, and an expected failure no longer arrives as a traceback.

Two things lose their scripted face rather than get a degraded one. The map
is a picture whose nodes are told apart by colour: monochrome it would be
unreadable, coloured it could not be piped anywhere useful, and the nodes
themselves are still in `contacts`. The QR codes are a second rendering of
a link the output already prints.

ui.ack joins ui.note to draw the line the change needed: a note is output,
an acknowledgement is reassurance a person wants and a script must filter
out, so the menu prints it and the CLI drops it.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 92d31a3191 Every file is spelled the way the formatter spells it
`ruff format .` across the repo: 153 files, no behaviour change. This is the
second gate CONTRIBUTING.md promises, and until now it reported 154 files needing
reformat — so a first contributor ran the command the guide told them to run and
could not tell their own diff from the background.

Landed on its own, with nothing else in it, because a whole-repo reformat is only
safe to skip past in blame if it is provably nothing but layout. It was checked
that way rather than assumed: every changed file was formatted in memory and
compared by full `ast.dump()`, and 152 of 153 come out structurally identical
(the one exception was a docstring opening on a quote character, fixed in the
commit before this one). The string and comment token streams were diffed
separately, so a quote flip or an edited comment could not hide inside a
re-layout — five quote-style normalisations and sixteen implicit-concatenation
joins, all value-identical, and one commented-out line gaining the space after
its `#`. `meshterm specimen` is byte-identical on both platforms, and the suite
is 1888 green, gallery gate and `test_theme16` included.

What actually changed, in order of how much of the diff it is: wrapped calls and
signatures rejoin onto one line where they fit inside the hundred columns; the
magic trailing comma expands what it is there to expand; complex slices gain
their spaces (`[len(noise) :]`); a few redundant parens go. The tables that are
laid out to be read were fenced in the previous commit and are untouched here.

The aligned trailing-comment column is gone from about ninety lanes that were not
fenced — including the `heat.*` ladder in `MESH_THEME`, which cannot be fenced
where it sits. Every comment stays on the entry it describes, so nothing there
reads wrong; it just no longer lines up.

Add this commit to `.git-blame-ignore-revs`, which follows immediately.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 71b16ec7b7 The annotations, imports, and dead locals answer to ruff
`ruff check --fix` over the whole tree, ahead of putting the linter in CI:
1977 mechanical fixes, overwhelmingly `Optional[X]` → `X | None` (1186 in the
package alone) and the quoted annotations that `from __future__ import
annotations` already made unnecessary, plus import sorting and unused imports.
Nothing here changes behaviour — the suite is 1885 green before and after.

Four findings were real rather than stylistic and are fixed by hand: a dead
`cells` range in `MapCanvas`, a dead slot dict in the heat-ladder test, a
`ProgressScreen` task handle nobody read, and a tab loop binding a `label` it
never used. The two `F821`s were quoted forward references to names imported
inside their function bodies — now declared under `TYPE_CHECKING`, which keeps
`test_performance`'s local import (it guards the startup import graph) while
letting the linter resolve the name.

412 findings remain and are deliberately untouched: they need a decision about
the rule, not an edit to the code.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 bcf387c620 The test fixtures stop being a picture of one person's mesh
Every node in the suite was named after hardware on JP's desk: YUL-Cartierville
and YUL-Poly are repeaters he runs, two more were the BLE
companions, another his own handle, and a long tail of YUL-Far / YUL-Me / bare
YUL besides. A stranger reading the tests learned his callsign, his city and his
gear before learning what the tests check.

They join the family the suite had already invented for exactly this — Alice,
Lounge, Yagi-Repeater, hub-1: Hilltop-Repeater, Lakeside, Waymarker, Homestead,
and Hub for the 3d-keyed node. Hub is not a new name; test_device_config already
called that contact Hub, so the suite was carrying two names for one fixture.

Replacements are the same length as what they replace, so every width budget,
truncation assertion and gallery line is unchanged. The two map tests that type
a literal query picked `yu`/`yul` to match the old name; they type `hi`/`hil`
now, same length, same single match.

Left alone on purpose: the About page and the donate link, where the handle and
the repeaters are the point, the hand-drawn splash art, and the XIAO README
reporting what JP's own radio advertises.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 4.8 733a68857c Contacts: rename the mislabeled Nodes feature; sharpen node vs contact
The "Nodes" menu was a contacts roster mislabeled — it lists the device's
contacts (get_contacts), which upstream meshcore calls "contact" too. Rename
throughout, no CLI alias:

- tools/nodes.py -> tools/contacts.py (ContactsTool, `meshterm contacts`)
- ui/nodes_screen.py -> ui/contacts_screen.py (ContactsScreen/open_contacts)
- ui/nodelist.py -> ui/contactlist.py (ContactListScreen/ContactRow)
- widgets: NodesSort->ContactsSort, nodes_table->contacts_table

Courier's recipient is a contact you address, so its prose and CLI arg
(`courier queue CONTACT ...`) follow; persisted node_key/node_name stay.

The reception/hardware layer keeps "node" — HeardNode, heard_nodes(),
observations.node, trace_hops.node, map/atlas participants, node types, admin
targets, and the Time Machine's reception picker (its "Nodes" heading stands).
CLAUDE.md's lexicon is rewritten to the refined definitions: node = any mesh
radio; contact = a node your device knows (discovered or added).

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Fable 5 93c1937de7 Courier recipient picker: the shared node list, Enter commits
The queueing flow's inline glyph rows give way to the app's one node
list: full NAME/HEARD/PKTS/KEY lanes, key-hued names, recency-heat
ages, PKTS from the recorder's overheard tallies, and the same
Ctrl+arrow sort ring and type-to-filter as the Nodes screen and the
Time Machine picker. It opens on the heard column freshest-first (the
old fixed order, now just a default), name sorts A→Z, and Enter
resolves the highlighted Contact into the flow; the footer spells the
grammar out with Esc cancelling the step.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Fable 5 98aa6ef7dc Courier outbox: live rows, live sections
The outbox used to freeze at whatever it showed when it opened —
"retry in ~4 m" would still read 4 m ten minutes later, and a delivery
only moved to Finished after some unrelated keypress rebuilt the list.
Entry rows become callable titles recomputed on every repaint (the 1 s
app baseline), so countdowns and ages tick for real; a new
CourierOutboxScreen fingerprints the store's shape once a second from
an opener ticker and recomposes the sections in place only when an
entry appeared, finished, or was cleared — keeping the highlight on
its entry, the node-list rebuild idiom. No store callback needed: the
courier's own pass cadence is 30 s, so a 1 s shape check lands every
transition promptly.

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 4.8 583be7c4f7 Compose fields: share one UTF-8 byte gauge, and put it on the courier entry
Lift the chat compose bar's byte budget into a reusable gauge and reuse it
wherever a field feeds a size-capped LoRa packet.

- prompt.py gains byte_counter/byte_style and the DM/CHANNEL byte limits, plus
a byte_limit option on TextScreen: a field so limited rides the shared
  used/limit gauge (right-pinned, green→yellow→orange→red) and blocks Enter
once the text tops the cap, with a "Too long by n bytes" note. Ui.text and
  session.text thread byte_limit through.
- chat.py drops its private copies and calls the shared byte_counter; the
  limits now come from prompt.py.
- The courier's "Message for …" entry passes byte_limit=DM_BYTE_LIMIT so a
queued message is gauged and capped the same way a live chat message is.

Also fixes a courier scheduling bug uncovered here: the "When it's next heard"
row carried the value None, indistinguishable from session.select's own cancel
sentinel — backing out of the picker silently queued the message. It now
carries its own WHEN_HEARD sentinel, so Esc cancels and the row means no
schedule.

Full suite green (806).

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 4.8 965783d276 Network (TCP) companions: connect, remember, and manage from the picker
Add TCP alongside serial and BLE as a first-class companion transport, end to
end: discovery/connection/selection learn a tcp: stable_id and host:port target,
--tcp and TCP config profiles reach a WiFi board or network proxy, and a network
companion -- which isn't discoverable -- is rebuilt into the picker from its
remembered endpoint.

Device picker gains the network-device affordances:
- "Add a network device" prompts for host:port, smoke-tests it, and remembers it.
The row is marked "- experimental" in the cautionary hue.
- Delete on a network row opens a chromeless Cancel/Remove confirm (Cancel left,
Remove right and default: Enter removes, Esc cancels), then DeviceStore.forget
prunes it and re-draws the list. Serial/BLE rows stay inert.
- The "Del remove" footer atom now follows the highlight, surfacing on the box's
bottom border only while the cursor sits on a deletable row; the box is sized
to the fullest footer so it never widens mid-navigation.

Folds in the accompanying courier, channels, and config refinements built along
the way. Screens stay readable at 72 cols; full suite green (745 tests).

Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Fable 5 d75a9aa2db Courier: a store-and-forward outbox that delivers when the node shows up
Queue a direct message for a node that isn't reachable right now and a
session-long background loop delivers it when the recipient is next
heard — or at a scheduled local time ("next 07:00", "in 3 h", any
HH:MM). Each attempt is an ordinary chat send (it lands in the
conversation history with its ack state, exactly as if typed); failures
back off exponentially and, after the first shot, wait until the node
is heard again, so an absent node is never hammered on faith. One
attempt per pass keeps a backlog draining politely, and after five
unacknowledged tries the courier gives up and says so. Outcomes raise
Watchtower alerts, so the header's badge lights when an overnight
delivery finally lands.

The outbox persists in courier.json (a queued message must survive
restarts or the promise is hollow), a Mesh-section screen carries the
queueing flow, per-entry Send now / Cancel, and the finished history,
and a scripted `courier <node> <text…> [--at HH:MM]` queues without
transmitting anything.
