T
Jean-Pierre MartineauandClaude Opus 5 92d31a3191 Every file is spelled the way the formatter spells it
`ruff format .` across the repo: 153 files, no behaviour change. This is the
second gate CONTRIBUTING.md promises, and until now it reported 154 files needing
reformat — so a first contributor ran the command the guide told them to run and
could not tell their own diff from the background.

Landed on its own, with nothing else in it, because a whole-repo reformat is only
safe to skip past in blame if it is provably nothing but layout. It was checked
that way rather than assumed: every changed file was formatted in memory and
compared by full `ast.dump()`, and 152 of 153 come out structurally identical
(the one exception was a docstring opening on a quote character, fixed in the
commit before this one). The string and comment token streams were diffed
separately, so a quote flip or an edited comment could not hide inside a
re-layout — five quote-style normalisations and sixteen implicit-concatenation
joins, all value-identical, and one commented-out line gaining the space after
its `#`. `meshterm specimen` is byte-identical on both platforms, and the suite
is 1888 green, gallery gate and `test_theme16` included.

What actually changed, in order of how much of the diff it is: wrapped calls and
signatures rejoin onto one line where they fit inside the hundred columns; the
magic trailing comma expands what it is there to expand; complex slices gain
their spaces (`[len(noise) :]`); a few redundant parens go. The tables that are
laid out to be read were fenced in the previous commit and are untouched here.

The aligned trailing-comment column is gone from about ninety lanes that were not
fenced — including the `heat.*` ladder in `MESH_THEME`, which cannot be fenced
where it sits. Every comment stays on the entry it describes, so nothing there
reads wrong; it just no longer lines up.

Add this commit to `.git-blame-ignore-revs`, which follows immediately.

"""The trace tools: path traces, live in the menu, one-shot on the CLI.
A trace is one walked path — the protocol has no destination field, so "target" is
purely a UX notion — and the menu splits the feature along exactly that line:
* **Trace target** (``trace``): *can I reach this node?* Pick a target from a
recency-ordered list; the live screen composes/explores symmetric routes that turn
at the target and come home over the mirrored hops. The list stays pushed underneath
for the whole visit, so Esc from a walk lands back on the row that launched it —
freshly re-sorted by what was just traced — and the next node is one Enter away.
* **Trace path** (``trace-path``): *how far can a route I build carry?* No target and
no picker — the whole walk is composed hop by hop and only has to end within our
own earshot. Traces record under the ``(path)`` sentinel, keeping composed walks
out of the target picker's history.
Both open the live trace screen (:mod:`meshterm.ui.trace_screen`) armed but idle:
nothing transmits until Trace is committed, which runs the chosen sample count
(1–8 traces, paced between transmissions — repeaters penalize, and can blacklist,
nodes that burst traffic, so multi-trace runs always sleep a cooldown between sends).
On the CLI each stays a scriptable one-shot: run one trace, print the route and
per-hop SNR, exit.
Both front ends persist identically: one ``runs`` row per trace, recorded under it, so
stored history reads the same no matter where it came from.

The picker **stays pushed** for the whole visit (the app's hub idiom), so the live
trace screen nests *above* it: Esc out of a trace is one pop, landing back on the
row it was launched from with the cursor, the sort and any typed filter intact, and
Esc from the picker is the second pop, out to the menu. The picker used to be a
one-shot prompt that resolved and popped before the screen opened, which left the
trace screen sitting directly on the menu — so a single Esc skipped the picker
entirely and there was no way back to the list except reopening the tool.
Every returning trace ages the row it walked, and the list is *sorted* by that
column, so the lanes are re-read and swapped in place afterwards: the node just
traced rises to the top of the ``TRACED`` sort with the highlight riding it. The
ages come from stored history alone, so coming back costs no device round-trip.
