Typing narrows the outbox again, and its footer says so. With the scroll atom, the footer of an entry row is wider than 72 cells, which JP accepted. The footer line no longer cuts a hint that is too wide at the edge, which took Esc with it: it drops atoms instead, as the splash already did. The outbox drops "Del delete" first. """The Courier screens: the outbox, queueing flow, and per-message actions.
The interactive face of the ``courier`` tool. One select-list screen holds the whole
feature (the persistent-backdrop pattern). It has these parts:
- The waiting outbox. Each row shows its target (the recipient), its trigger (what the
entry waits for before it goes out), and its message. It waits to hear the contact, it
is scheduled for a time, or it backs off between retries.
- The finished history (delivered or given up), with the outcome of each entry.
- The queueing flow: select a contact, write the message, choose when to send it.
The entries are a table that ←→ pan as one unit, under the column headers. Nothing in a
row is shortened: a long name or a long message is all there, and the pan brings it into
view. Enter on a waiting entry opens the message to edit, and Enter on a finished entry
opens it to read. ``^R`` on a waiting entry is *Send now* (one forced attempt, and the
outcome is in a dialog). Delete removes an entry of either section, after a confirm.
The outbox is **live** while it is open. Each row is a callable title that the code
computes again at each paint, so "retry in ~N m" counts down in real time. A ticker
compares the shape of the store (the set of entries and their statuses) once each second.
When something changed, the ticker builds the sections again in place, and the highlight
stays on its entry. For example, a delivery puts its row in *Finished* within one second,
with no key press.
The background service (:mod:`meshterm.services.courier`) does the delivery. The menu
starts this service with the other services that are always on. Thus this screen does not
need to stay open for a queued message to go out.

The rows are callable titles (refer to :attr:`~meshterm.ui.tui.select.Choice.title`).
Thus each paint reads the live state of each entry again: the retry countdown, the note
that the contact is fresh or that the entry waits, and the age of a finished row. A row
cannot show a change of structure by a new render of itself. Examples are an entry that
moves from waiting to finished, a new queue, and a cleared history. Thus the ticker of
the opener calls :meth:`refresh`. This method makes a fingerprint of the shape of the
store. It composes the sections again in place only when the fingerprint changed, and
the highlight stays on its entry (the rebuild idiom of

:class:`~meshterm.ui.contactlist.ContactListScreen`).

Three keys act on the highlighted entry. Enter opens its message (refer to

The footer and the F-key lane name ``^R`` and Delete only on the rows on which they act.
``^R`` is the chord that the app uses for "send again" in each conversation, and a
chord, because this list filters as the user types.
On an entry row that pans, the full footer is wider than the 72 cells of a terminal.
That is a known exception to the limit (JP, 2026-10-22: "bring the filter back, tough
luck if it doesn't fit in the footer"). The hint line then removes ``Del delete``
first (:attr:`spare_hint_atoms`, refer to :func:`~meshterm.ui.tui.frame.fitted_footer`),
