Joining a room moves out of Chat into a Rooms page beside Channels. It
lists every room server the radio knows, joined ones first, with each
room's access, unread count, last post and last-heard time. Each room
has a page: join, log in again, change password, open the board, forget
it, or delete its stored posts. Chat now lists only joined rooms, the way
it lists only channels on a slot, and only a joined room raises the
unread badge. chat join becomes rooms join, alongside rooms list and
rooms forget.
"No reply" told the reader nothing, because a room is just as silent for
a wrong password as for a login that never reached it. Testing on
hardware showed the commonest cause is neither: a login sent along the
route the radio had learned met silence, and the same login by flood was
accepted in eleven seconds. A silent login is now explained from what is
known: how it went out, when the room was last heard, and whether this
password has worked before. It offers the one next step that evidence
points at:
- Try by flood, after a learned route met silence. The radio forgets
the route (local, nothing transmitted), then sends the login once.
- Try again…, after a flood met silence. The prompt reopens with the
password filled in, so Enter resends it and typing replaces it.
- Add it & try again, when the radio doesn't hold the room as a contact.
Every retry is a button press, and none is ever sent on its own. A
password over 15 bytes is refused at the prompt, since MeshCore sends
only the first 15.
On the board, a failed or unfinished login used to leave the compose
line taking posts the room would drop. It now opens only while we are in
and may post, and otherwise says why and what to press. Opening a joined
room that has gone quiet logs in in the background. ^L runs the
explained flow.
Underneath, the login exchange listens for the radio's own confirmation,
matched to the login by its expected ack. It records whether the login
went by flood or along a route, or the radio's reason for not sending it
at all. This also corrects the debug log: "send unacknowledged" read the
library's wait for the *answer* as the send. On hardware the radio
confirms in under 0.1 s. Device.reset_route is new. The simulator learns
routes, can be given a stale one, and refloods.

chat join logs in to a room server and prints what it allowed: member,
admin or read-only. It uses --password, or the password MeshTerm
remembers for the room. A room says nothing to a wrong password, so a
join that hears nothing fails (exit 4) and names both possible reasons.
send --to a room posts to it, and its receipt says kind "room". A room's
history names each post's author where a direct transcript names the
peer, drawn the way a route draws a hop: "Alice (d4e5f6a7)", or the bare
hash when nothing names the key. The document carries the author on
every row, null outside a room, so history answers in one shape for
every kind of conversation; listen streams it too. chat list calls a
room a room.
The CLI manual, the features guide and the README describe rooms, and
CLAUDE.md adds room and post to the lexicon, 📌 to the icons, and ^L to
the chord list.

A room server is a message board on a radio: it keeps its members' last
posts and sends each member the ones they missed. MeshTerm could see rooms
and run your own, but not join one. Posts that reached the radio were filed
as direct messages from the room, with their authors thrown away.
Chat now has a Rooms section between Channels and Direct. Opening a room
shows its board at once, each post under the member who wrote it. A post
carries the first four bytes of its author's key, so it is named by any
contact or overheard advert with that key and coloured by the key itself.
An author nothing names stands as the hash, in the unknown-node grey. The
first visit asks for the room's password over the board. After that,
opening a room logs in again only once it has been quiet for
room_relogin_minutes (a new preference, 30 by default), and ^L (F6 on the
handhelds) logs in on demand. The title says what the room allowed:
member, admin or read-only. A read-only member gets a line saying the room
drops their posts, in place of a compose box. A post goes out once, never
soft-retried, since a duplicate would reach every member.
Underneath: messages carry an author (schema 18), a room's board leaves
out its command replies, and a re-sent post is recorded once. Room posts
raise the unread badge and a room's command replies don't. The device
gains room_login, sharing admin_login's exchange and reading the access
the room granted. Room passwords are remembered in rooms.json; an admin
login is kept in admin.json, shared with Repeater admin. The simulator
has a room, Lakeside BBS, to join with "hello".
Two fixes the research turned up. An admin command took the first direct
message from anyone as its reply, so a room post or a companion's message
landing mid-command was read as the node's answer. It now listens before
sending, and only for a reply from that node that is not a post. And
Repeater admin names a room server's guest password "Room password", the
password members join with.

The conversation list now reads CONVERSATION, NEW, LAST, MESSAGE: LAST
over the last message's age, MESSAGE over the message, shortening to MSG
on a narrow terminal. The live feed's timestamp lane is TIME again, and
the channel list keeps NEW.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The chat picker's unread count is headed NEW and its last-message age
WHEN; the channel list's unread count is NEW; the live feed's timestamp
lane is WHEN. Short words over a badge and an age, which UNREAD outgrew
by a cell and had to borrow the gap for. The command line's columns keep
their names: they are a documented contract of their own.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The firmware has no per-channel scope, so a channel send is now a window
on the companion's session scope: set it, send, restore it, under a
transmit lock every flood-capable send also takes (DMs, adverts, admin
commands, logins, regions/neighbour requests), so nothing interleaves.
Ack waits stay outside the lock. A scope the radio can't take stops the
message (FloodScopeError naming the firmware it needs) rather than sending
it unscoped or under the default; * checks the firmware version, since
before 1.16 the override would quietly fall back to the default scope.
A failed restore is repaired by the next transmission.
Channel scopes are set from the channel page's Send scope picker (known
regions with their carriers, or a typed name) and from the CLI (channels
scope, chat send --scope). The chat's title carries the scope as a status
atom, ^R/Resend sends the newest scoped message again unscoped after an
amber confirm, and the scope each sent message went under is recorded
(messages.scope, schema v17) so the paths dialog can say what it went
under and when no known repeater carries that region. Device config now
teaches the region store the default scope it reads or sets.

Apache-2.0 does not require per-file headers, but a file lifted out of the tree carried no marking at all. One comment line, first (or right after a shebang), on every .py under meshterm/, tests/, packaging/ and scripts/, plus the extensionless SPI bridge; tests/test_spdx.py keeps a new file from landing without one.

A leading underscore says "internal to this file, don't import me", and the
column-age formatter and the node glyph table wore one while seventeen modules
imported them and CLAUDE.md named them as the one place each concept lives.
format_age sits beside format_ago now (prose age, column age), NODE_GLYPHS and
DEFAULT_GLYPH beside them, age_seconds with the ages. A mechanical rename, 140
references across 24 files, CLAUDE.md's three lines with them so the guide and
the code move as one.

A pre-release architecture and QA pass, applied as one change because the moves
share files and only the whole set was gate-tested (2480 passed, ruff clean).
Three new modules pull logic down out of layers that should not own it:
core/channel_probe.py (ChannelSlot, read_channel_slots, probe_channel_slots)
so services/device_state.py no longer imports a screen; services/markers.py
(gather_markers, with MapMarker a core/models dataclass) so two screens stop
importing a tool; core/tracing.py (trace_timeout, path_hash_flags) so
core/connection.py no longer imports services. The routing-prefix width is
DeviceState.routing_prefix_bytes(), replacing five private cross-module imports.
One definition per thing: is_path_hash, the NodeResolver/NameKeyResolver
aliases, TILE_RETRY_SECONDS, haversine_km, marks.SELF_MARK, MENTION; nine
private names that crossed module boundaries got public ones and menus.__all__
lists what other modules import. A preference's default is written once
(ALERT_CAP, DONE_CAP, DEFAULT_VIEW_FRACTION read the registry), the stranded
PREFERENCES doc comment sits on its subject, and three docstrings stop naming
questionary, a library dropped long ago.
The command line gains --version (eager, exit 0, documented, tested) and drops
the -p short form on trace, trace-path and tx-optimize: the root lifts -p as
--profile before a leaf ever sees it, so the leaf's could never work, and a
derived test now checks every leaf against every root short option.
tx-optimize with a one-hop --path is a usage error, exit 2, because nothing
transmitted is not a device failure. Log handlers are closed before they are
cleared (197 unclosed-file warnings gone), chat's fire-and-forget tasks keep a
reference, coroutines use get_running_loop(), the never-awaited MapScreen._load
in a test is awaited, and the CLI sweep passes --no-ble to devices so a test
run stops turning on the Bluetooth radio three times (the suite is 40 % faster).
The about page lists every dependency, and the release skill bumps the README's
download names, which still said 0.2.8.
apply_ops stays in tools/: it and its helpers build report blocks and open two
screens, so moving it to core/ would invert core over ui. The widgets CLAUDE.md
names by their private spellings (_format_age, _NODE_GLYPHS) keep them until
CLAUDE.md is edited alongside.

The chat picker's conversation lane was a flat 22 cells, and every cell
of it past the longest name in the list was padding in front of a short
one — taken straight out of the last-message preview, which is the only
run on the row with something to say. On the PicoCalc's 53 columns that
left the message 12 cells: enough for a sender's name and a colon.
It is measured now, against the names the list actually holds, floored
at the header word and capped at the shape of a repeater-style name.
The preview keeps what it saves: 31 cells to 37 on a 72-column
terminal, 12 to 18 on the console.
What the cap costs is the tail of a long name, so the row gained the way
to read past its own edge that every other lane-and-run list in the app
already had: ←→ slide the message under the pinned columns, one row at a
time (Choice.hscroll_from). The preview had to stop pre-truncating
itself at 40 cells to make that worth pressing — a cut made before the
terminal's own leaves nothing to reveal.
The marker lane was measured too, and was wrong. A contact's dot was
padded to "a channel's double-cell glyph", which the channel glyph is on
regular and is not in the console font: on the PicoCalc every channel
row sat a cell to the left of every direct row, header over neither. It
now pads to what the glyph reports.
The footer had to give a cell back for the scroll atom, since it can
coincide with the delete atom on any thread with history — the same
arithmetic the purge preview does in its own comment. Enter opens a
screen here, so its verb is `open` rather than the default `select`,
which pays for most of it; `Del delete history` spends the rest on an
object the highlighted row is already naming.
The picker joins the gallery, which is what would have caught the marker
lane.

`meshterm contacts --json` is what a person types, and it failed with a
bare usage error: Click binds an option to whatever command declares it,
so a global on the callback is a parse error one word later. For an
output format that is the wrong way round — `-o json` goes after the verb
in every tool that has one, and --json is the first thing anyone reaches
for. The group's own options are now lifted to the front before Click
parses, so both orders mean the same run. `--` stops the lifting and
--help is never lifted, since `contacts --help` must stay the contacts
help rather than quietly becoming the program's.
And a column headed AGE held `2026-09-08T04:18:25-04:00` under
--absolute. Every other time column already names the fact — HEARD,
RECORDED, FINISHED — which stays true whichever form the run asked for;
only chat's named the form. `when()` now says so where the header is
declared.

Forty-nine leaf commands now state a Report instead of printing one, so --json
works on all of them at once rather than on the two that grew a branch for it.
The two hand-rolled JSON paths are gone: devices no longer builds a payload dict
of its own, and its empty scan exits 5 like the plain path always did rather than
0 — a rendering flag has no business moving the report.
The plain face changes premise along with it. It used to be a serialisation
format a person could squint at, and several of its rules existed only to make
splitting safe. Splitting is the machine face's job now, so:
- Names are bare. Alignment is the delimiter; the escaping under the quoting
stays, because nothing else stops a name a node broadcast from ending its own
record.
- Times are ages. "Heard recently?" is the question a contacts listing is opened
to ask, and an ISO instant makes the reader do arithmetic to answer it.
--absolute puts the instants back; an appointment, the device clock and a live
capture's own column were never ages and still aren't.
- A route takes arrows and a path keeps its commas. The lexicon has always split
these and the output never did, so a route line looked pasteable into --path,
which it is not.
- The listings gain what was cut for parser hygiene: contacts gets the HASH
--path takes and a LOCATION the model has always carried, preferences gets the
DESCRIPTION already written in its registry, and the two live streams get
pinned lanes — which is what let them have columns at all, and with them the
last call site for the quoting.
- The four written pages wrap at 72 instead of printing 600-cell paragraphs. It
is the one exception to "no wrapping", and the rule's own reason says why: a
paragraph has no fields to land under the wrong headings.
info keeps its keys and gains a gloss on the four readings nobody can hold in
their head (93784 (1d 2h)); it is the one key/value block with no set behind it,
so there is no round trip to protect. config show is untouched, deliberately.

Four places where the CLI answered a question the caller had not asked.
`--profile yagi` naming no profile fell through to ordinary discovery, so
a typo in a scheduled advert transmitted from whichever radio happened to
be attached. Naming a profile is a claim about which device; an
unkeepable claim is a bad argument, not a default.
`--sort bogus` sorted by the default and `--category long_hual` selected
every discipline — which then came back as exit 5, the code that means a
real empty result. A caller branching on 5 could not tell "no records"
from "you misspelled the discipline". `ContactsSort.from_name` still
forgives an unknown name, because a saved preference from an older build
must not wedge the menu's list; the command line refuses instead.
A `--port` that would not open reported exit 4 and "the connection to the
device was lost", describing a connection there had never been. Every
failure while acquiring the device is the other status: nothing was
transmitted. It now says which port, and why.
A message body could hold a newline, which ended its record early and
left the remainder indented under the other columns as a second record
with an empty TIME — the one field a stranger fills in, breaking the one
rule the format has. script.oneline folds it flat.
And an unnamed node read as `""` in one listing and `-` in the next:
seven of the ten places that print a name were claiming "called nothing"
where they meant "never said". script.name draws the distinction once,
which is also the one the JSON rendering will need.

The CLI had grown the menu's manners -- colour, boxes, section headings,
glyph columns, a closing check mark -- and every one of them is in the way
of the thing it is actually for. It now prints like a standard Unix
utility: plain text, no escape sequences at all, no frames, one record per
line, and nothing wrapped, so a long line runs off the right instead of
folding its fields onto a second one.
meshterm/ui/script.py is the whole vocabulary. Listings are an uppercase
header and space-aligned records; key/value blocks are sysctl's shape, and
a `get` prints the bare value alone. Names are quoted wherever they share a
line, because a name can hold a space or a comma and a bare one is not a
field. A route reads "Origin" (3d),"Relay" (f2),"Us" (a1) -- the hash
outside the quotes, our own node a hop like any other rather than a star,
since the hash is what carries the identity that colour carries on screen.
Times are absolute local ISO-8601 and "-" is the one token for absent.
The return value is now half the report: 0 ok, 1 failure, 2 usage, 3 no
device, 4 the device was reached and the operation failed, 5 nothing to
report. That last one is the point -- a command that ran fine and found
nothing prints nothing and says so in $?, so a script never has to count
output lines to tell an empty mesh from a full one. Errors and progress
moved to stderr, and an expected failure no longer arrives as a traceback.
Two things lose their scripted face rather than get a degraded one. The map
is a picture whose nodes are told apart by colour: monochrome it would be
unreadable, coloured it could not be piped anywhere useful, and the nodes
themselves are still in `contacts`. The QR codes are a second rendering of
a link the output already prints.
ui.ack joins ui.note to draw the line the change needed: a note is output,
an acknowledgement is reassurance a person wants and a script must filter
out, so the menu prints it and the CLI drops it.

`ruff format .` across the repo: 153 files, no behaviour change. This is the
second gate CONTRIBUTING.md promises, and until now it reported 154 files needing
reformat — so a first contributor ran the command the guide told them to run and
could not tell their own diff from the background.
Landed on its own, with nothing else in it, because a whole-repo reformat is only
safe to skip past in blame if it is provably nothing but layout. It was checked
that way rather than assumed: every changed file was formatted in memory and
compared by full `ast.dump()`, and 152 of 153 come out structurally identical
(the one exception was a docstring opening on a quote character, fixed in the
commit before this one). The string and comment token streams were diffed
separately, so a quote flip or an edited comment could not hide inside a
re-layout — five quote-style normalisations and sixteen implicit-concatenation
joins, all value-identical, and one commented-out line gaining the space after
its `#`. `meshterm specimen` is byte-identical on both platforms, and the suite
is 1888 green, gallery gate and `test_theme16` included.
What actually changed, in order of how much of the diff it is: wrapped calls and
signatures rejoin onto one line where they fit inside the hundred columns; the
magic trailing comma expands what it is there to expand; complex slices gain
their spaces (`[len(noise) :]`); a few redundant parens go. The tables that are
laid out to be read were fenced in the previous commit and are untouched here.
The aligned trailing-comment column is gone from about ninety lanes that were not
fenced — including the `heat.*` ladder in `MESH_THEME`, which cannot be fenced
where it sits. Every comment stays on the entry it describes, so nothing there
reads wrong; it just no longer lines up.
Add this commit to `.git-blame-ignore-revs`, which follows immediately.

`D205` across the 20 sites in `meshterm/` and `scripts/`, which leaves the
package and the scripts fully ruff-clean.
None of these were a summary that happened to wrap. They were a paragraph with
no summary at all, so the fix is additive: a plain sentence saying what the
thing *is* goes on the first line, and the prose that was there becomes the
description under it. "The transport of the current/selected connection:
``"serial"``, ``"ble"``, ``"tcp"``, or ``None``" now opens with "Which
transport the current or selected connection uses" and lists the four values
below; `_emit` leads with what it returns before the four paragraphs on why a
wide glyph forces a whole-row repaint.

`ruff check --fix` over the whole tree, ahead of putting the linter in CI:
1977 mechanical fixes, overwhelmingly `Optional[X]` → `X | None` (1186 in the
package alone) and the quoted annotations that `from __future__ import
annotations` already made unnecessary, plus import sorting and unused imports.
Nothing here changes behaviour — the suite is 1885 green before and after.
Four findings were real rather than stylistic and are fixed by hand: a dead
`cells` range in `MapCanvas`, a dead slot dict in the heat-ladder test, a
`ProgressScreen` task handle nobody read, and a tab loop binding a `label` it
never used. The two `F821`s were quoted forward references to names imported
inside their function bodies — now declared under `TYPE_CHECKING`, which keeps
`test_performance`'s local import (it guards the startup import graph) while
letting the linter resolve the name.
412 findings remain and are deliberately untouched: they need a decision about
the rule, not an edit to the code.

Down off the last row wrapped to the first on a good third of the app's
lists, and the select screen shipped that as its default -- twenty-one
call sites had already opted out one at a time, each writing wrap=False
for its own reason. The reasons were all the same one, so the flag is
gone and clamping is simply what a cursor does.
The window follows the highlight, so a roll doesn't move a pointer: it
hauls the whole list back to the other end and flips its edge markers,
which reads as the screen changing under you rather than as one step.
Held-down arrows now settle at an end instead of looping past what you
were trying to reach.
The hand-rolled cursors came along: the trophy case's, the trace and TX
optimize action rows, the reorder list -- where the ungrabbed cursor
wrapped while the grabbed one clamped, so the same two keys meant
opposite things in the two modes -- a prompt's completion list, and a
dialog's buttons.
Tab is the exception, and it stays a ring: it has no reverse of its own,
so on the last chip it comes round or it dead-ends. Same for the three
picocalc F-lane chips that are single-key advancers -- Sort, the node
page's tab strip, the Time Machine's window -- where the lane offers no
way back.

Backing out of a thread already landed on the picker rather than the menu, but
on a brand-new one: the tool re-ran the whole picker each round and put the
cursor back with a default= restore, which recovers the cursor alone and only
while the row it names still exists. Anything typed to narrow the list was gone
every time, and the screen was rebuilt around two devstate reads.
The picker moves into the tool's own loop and stays pushed, so a chat nests
above it and Esc is one pop onto the row it was opened from — filter, scroll and
all. The row builder splits out as _picker_items, and the rows are swapped in
place after every chat and every delete: an exchange moves its thread up the
recency order and a deleted history hollows its dot and demotes the row, so the
list has to be re-read, and replace_items follows the highlighted thread there.
The picker tests now read _picker_items directly rather than intercepting a
select() call, and the two Del tests drive _delete_history and assert the
rebuilt row demotes — the same coverage, one layer down from the loop.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The app-wide Back row existed because it duplicated Esc — two of its call
sites said as much in a comment. On both platforms Esc is a labelled key
and every footer hint names it, so the row bought nothing for the blank
separator and line it took out of every screen; on the PicoCalc's 26 rows
that is a row in thirteen.
back_rows() is gone, and with it the four hand-drawn copies: ReorderScreen's
clean-state row, the live feed's pinned foot stop (the cursor now clamps on
the oldest packet), node detail's tail action, and the action-list rows on
the trace and TX-sweep screens.
Kept, because there leaving is a choice rather than an exit — the same rule
that keeps a dialog's Cancel button: exit_rows()' staged pair, where Apply
has no key of its own and ✗ Back names what the other way out costs;
ReorderScreen's dirty-state pair; the two Quit rows, which initiate the
app's terminal action behind a confirm; and the new-record dialog's Close,
which is its default, so dropping it would let a reflex Enter navigate.
With no Back row there is no Back value: the six spellings callers used to
test three at a time (_BACK, "__back__", _CANCEL, two tuple shapes, bare
None) collapse to `is CANCEL` / `is None`. The gallery now asserts the
absence of an exit row on every screen, on both platforms.
Resolves findings E and §10 of docs/survey-navigation.md. Finding D — Esc
peeling a filter on three screens and leaving on two — still stands, and is
now the only thing left telling a user what Esc does.

The label column is the widest tool title plus two cells of gap, which
leaves the muted description 47 to work in. All 22 of them ran past it —
"Act on the device itself — clock, backup, identity key, reboot, reset"
needed 94 columns of terminal to say what 67 could. The row scrolled
under ←→ rather than lying, but a description you have to scroll is a
description nobody reads.
Rewritten to fit: the subject moves into the title's shadow (the row
already says Device actions, so the description just lists them), the
parenthetical asides go, and the trailing clause that repeated the
obvious goes with them. Widest row is now exactly 72.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The menu asks "What would you like to do?" and then grouped its rows by
subject, which is not an answer to that. Mesh had grown to seven of the
nineteen rows — live watching, passive browsing, and one transmit action
in the same bucket — and Tools said nothing at all, since everything in
the menu is a tool.
So each section now names a doing, and holds what shares it:
Message Chat · Channels · Courier · Contacts
Watch Dashboard · Live feed · Watchtower · Time machine
Explore Map · Mesh walk · Trace target · Trace path · Trophy case
This node Device info · Device configuration · Device actions · Send advert
Other nodes Repeater admin · TX optimize
Four rows moved for a reason. Contacts is the address book the three
features above it pick a recipient from, not a mesh view. Time machine is
the past tense of the Dashboard, and was stranded in the grab-bag. Send
advert is your own node announcing itself — a device action, filed with
the mesh views only because it was about the mesh. And Repeater admin and
TX optimize are the same job — someone else's radio, over the mesh, with
credentials — which the old Device-management/Tools split hid.
The two walks join the topology views they walk over, with the boards
that score them underneath: see a node, walk to it, get scored. Nothing
is renamed (a menu row still names the screen it opens) and no section is
now larger than five rows or smaller than two.

The first P3 (a84abf3) ran on the wrong model and its palette never
reached the TUI: MESH_THEME_16 was written in 256-colour cube indices
instead of the 16 VT slots, and the platform theme pick was wired into
the scripted-CLI console while the real rasterizer stayed hardcoded to
truecolor. Replace it end to end:
- theme._VT_SLOTS: the canonical slot->RGB design (conventional hue
families kept; slots 5/6 become the track/faint slates), MESH_THEME_16
rewritten against color(0..15) with the VT's bold-as-brightness and
dim-bank-background rules pinned by tests. /etc/vtrgb + a boot oneshot
install it (console-font script), OSC fallback when kbd is absent.
- platforms.on_platform: set_platform now re-runs registered bindings,
so theme, rasterizer and widgets swap implementations once per switch
and hot paths read module globals - no per-call get_platform().
- The render-boundary fold (theme.fold_text): one str.translate pass
(NFKD accent folds - the Terminus base has no accented Latin - plus
symbol stand-ins and the width-padded emoji map), an embedded-SGR
quantizer for canvas truecolor, and a ?-at-own-width catch-all that
makes the no-wide-glyph short-circuit true by construction. Applied at
the only two places every visible byte passes: render_to_ansi and
MapCanvas.to_ansi_lines.
- ui/fontset.py freezes the installed font's inventory (dumped live);
the gallery now asserts rendered picocalc ANSI carries no truecolor/
256-colour SGR and no character outside it - the parity gate the
first attempt faked by asserting a dataclass field.
- Font build: nine new 6x12 marks (ellipsis, warn, backspace, shift,
gear, refresh, clock, crosshair, padlock) drawn into donor slots, with
donor misses now fatal and a keeper canary (donating pi once erased
Cyrillic pe - shared slot). Table re-dumped on-device: identical to
fontset.py, 519 = 519.
- Type-based name colouring: registry moved to core/nodetypes (services
no longer import ui), fed from monitor observations, heard_nodes and
merge_contacts. Heat gradient quantizes to heat.* steps on picocalc.
- ui/marks.py: the P2-deferred constant relocation - widgets no longer
drags map_render/mapcanvas/pathgraph for tuples and aliases.
- meshterm specimen: the visual language on one card through the real
funnels - the on-device acceptance screen (JP's request).
- tools/chat: delivered/no-ack state uses the standard check/query
marks, not the banned emoji pair.
Verified on the Lyra: font+palette installed, specimen framebuffer
captures in .claude/plans/. 1259 tests green, 13 xfailed (P6 list).

tools/chat._ago carried its own copy of the now/5m/3h/2d/4w ladder plus
an inline _age_seconds; _format_age is THE column age widget, so change
the ladder once and every surface follows. The picker keeps its one real
difference — a naive timestamp reads as a blank lane, not "never" —
and now says so (housekeeping H-002).

The chat picker and the TX-optimize target picker appended their own
Separator + Back rows; back_rows is the enforcement point that keeps the
exit language from drifting (housekeeping H-004).

The chat picker's no-contacts line and the CLI's no-serial-devices line
were the last two wearing parentheses; the standard shape is bare prose
with an em-dash explanation (housekeeping H-005).

The listen summary said "stopped — saw n messages"; heard is the app's
word for having received something (housekeeping H-006).

Two things a grouped list has to keep in view while it scrolls, and neither one
was staying: the lane names that read every row, and the heading that says which
group a row belongs to.
The lanes come first. A column header means the same thing in every section, so
it is not a section landmark at all — it pins for the *whole* list, above any
heading, once it scrolls off (`Separator(pinned=True)`). It is drawn outside the
body slice, so it stays exactly one row: too wide for the terminal it ellipsizes
rather than wrapping and stealing a second reserved row from the content. And it
can now size itself — a Separator title may be a callable taking the render
width — so `column_header`/`Lane` lay each label over its own lane and hand back
the shorter form (DESCRIPTION → DESC) only for the lanes that actually overrun,
from the right, where the trailing lane is the only one with a cell to give.
`lane_header` is that header for `lane_row`'s lanes, shared by the two editors so
they head identical lanes identically.
The headings were the other half, and they were pinning the wrong row. Every
non-pinned separator was a candidate, and the rule takes the last one at or above
the scroll — so what pinned was whatever muted line sat lowest under the heading.
In the Trophy case that meant a discipline's *description* stuck to the top and
the heading itself never did; at the foot of any list, the blank spacer above
Back pinned a blank row. So heading-ness is explicit now (`Separator.heading`,
conferred by `section_heading`, which is why every hand-rolled `── … ──` in the
app — the main menu's categories, the chat picker's Channels/Direct, Trace path's
candidate and ranked lists — now goes through it, and why three lanes headers
that genuinely *are* their block's only landmark say so).
A landmark is also no longer one line but a block: a heading plus the separators
written immediately under it, before the section's first row. Prose written there
is the section's preamble — the Trophy case's "what this discipline scores" — and
it belongs overhead with the heading rather than scrolling away from the rows it
explains. The block hands its rows over one at a time as they leave, so the
heading pins while its description is still the top content row and the two pin
together once both are gone: what is overhead always continues seamlessly into
the body. It never takes more than half the viewport, giving rows up from the
end, so the row that says *which* section this is is the last one dropped.
The frame settles the scroll against however many rows come back rather than
assuming one, and re-asks after sliding the window at the bottom — a heading
among the dropped lines would otherwise vanish instead of pinning.

The recipient picker listed every contact, but a courier message is a
direct message — and a DM to a repeater, room, or sensor is meaningless.
Filter the recipient list to companions (an untyped contact gets the
benefit of the doubt), and open it sorted A→Z by name instead of by
heard, with heard/packets/key still a Ctrl+arrow away.
Fold the rule the chat picker already applied inline into one shared
predicate, is_direct_messageable(node_type), so "DMs go to companions
only" is enforced in a single place and both pickers speak it.

The Direct section now lists only companion nodes (a contact whose
type was never advertised gets the benefit of the doubt) — repeaters,
rooms, and sensors are not DM targets. Pressing Del on a contacted
thread offers the reserved-red Cancel/Delete confirm; on commit the
peer's stored messages are removed (new Repository.delete_chat_history
— channel history and other peers untouched), the unread count clears,
and the re-entered picker shows the row hollow-dotted in the
uncontacted tail. The Del atom rides the existing deletable-row
machinery, with delete_hint now threaded through Ui/TuiUi/session
select so the footer advertises it only on rows it can act on.

A new make_name_key_resolver (beside its trace_runner siblings) maps a
display name back to the node's key — contacts win, the recorder's
stored advert names fill in strangers — and name_style's keyless
fallback becomes muted: colour now always marks a keyed identity,
never a character-sum accident that two spellings of one node disagree
on. Wired through every keyless call site: the chat transcript's
sender headers and @mentions (a direct thread falls back to the peer's
key), the picker previews, the live feed's channel-sender lane, and
the route graph's origin label (new key_of hook on route_graph_style,
threaded through the packet viewer and Message paths). The chat
picker's contact dot switches to the standard companion pink — shape
still marks history — and contact labels take their key-derived hue.
name_rgb guards the muted style so braille canvases render the grey.

The session cache fixed the reads screens make on open, but opening the
heaviest screens still stalled for seconds — because the pickers and
screen-openers that run *in front of* those screens were still reading the
radio directly. The menu wraps prompt-gathering and execution in one busy
overlay, so a Trace or Chat open pays its picker's slow round-trips before
the (already-cached) screen behind it ever builds, which is why caching the
screens alone showed no improvement.
Route the interactive-open reads through ctx.devstate too:
- Chat's conversation picker read the channel-slot probe *and* the contacts
table on every open (~5s) — both now come from the cache (channels mapped
from the cached slots via the new _channels_from_slots, contacts served
cached). The CLI list/send path keeps reading fresh.
- Trace and TX-optimize target pickers now read contacts from the cache.
- The repeater-admin screen and the channels manager (its slot probe, on a
local copy so mutations still re-probe the fresh layout after invalidation)
read through the cache.
Small, session-stable reads (self-info, build_snapshot's tuning/path-hash)
are left as direct reads — they were never the seconds.

Every select list now builds its closing furniture through one module,
so the conventions hold by construction instead of by copy-paste:
* Back is THE exit word — bare, no arrow, no icon — with exactly one
blank separator above it (back_rows). Courier and Watchtower lose
their "← Back"; the rules popover's "← Close" becomes Back too.
* The staged-changes exit pair (✓ Apply … / ✗ Back — discard) moves to
exit_rows, shared by the config editor and repeater admin, along with
changes_phrase and one confirm_discard dialog (apply/send verb
parametrised).
* Label + description rows share menu_rows (cell-padded lanes): Device
actions, channel detail, repeater actions, and — converted from the
inline "label — description" style — Send advert, Identity key, and
the channel manager's Add-a-channel section, whose rows now read as
two aligned lanes with the trailing … that marks "opens a prompt".
* Grouped-list headings share section_heading (── Label ── in accent):
Watchtower, Courier, the Time Machine picker, and the admin picker
(which also drops the stray 🔑 inside its heading).
* Status marks normalize to ✓/✗ (U+2713/17): Watchtower's ✔ and the
✖ on Cancel-this-message / Stop-watching become err-tinted ✗ rows.
* fit_cells replaces the four private _fit copies (channels, dashboard,
time machine, chat picker) and measures display cells, so a wide
glyph in a name can't skew a lane; empty-state notes drop their
parentheses ("no channels configured yet", "no matches").

Chat, Channels, and Courier move into their own Messaging section at
the top; Mesh keeps the views over the mesh itself - Dashboard, Nodes,
Map, Atlas, Watchtower, Send advert - dropping from nine rows to six.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Messaging becomes Mesh and takes in Nodes (between Channels and Map —
the "who's out there" view) and Send advert (last in section: its one
action, after its views), so everything mesh-wide lives under one
heading. Device becomes Device management and keeps the box-level
tools; Diagnostics becomes Tools.

Tools gain an icon attribute — menu-only, so result windows and the
CLI keep the plain title — and the menu loop composes it into the
aligned name lane. Single-codepoint, emoji-presentation glyphs only,
so the two-cell width holds across terminals: 💬 Chat, 📻 Channels,
🌍 Map, 👥 Nodes, 📡 Send advert, 🔧 configuration, 🔨 actions,
📋 info, 🎯/👣 the traces, 🎧 Monitor, 📶 TX optimize, 🚪 Quit.

- Dialog footer hints take the border's hue one shade darker (hint.*
theme styles), mirroring the brighter title tinting.
- Dialogs get a blank breathing row above and below the body whenever
it doesn't cost visible content.
- The chat conversation picker gains column headers over its lanes.
- The map screen titles itself "Map", matching its menu item.
- The config editor lays settings out in aligned SETTING / VALUE /
DESCRIPTION columns under a header line, and with changes staged the
Apply and Back rows sit together below the blank separator.
- Device actions move out of the config editor into their own screen
behind a new menu-only device-actions tool (CLI equivalents stay
under the config group).
- Type-to-filter keeps section headers (and column headers) in place,
and section jumps now work over the filtered rows too.
- The main menu aligns tool names and muted descriptions into two
columns, headerless.

Enforce one voice across every screen: column and section headers are
UPPERCASE, menu items are Capitalized buttons, and short descriptions
drop their trailing period (with real ellipses instead of "...").
Tools gain a display `title` separate from their kebab-case CLI name,
so a menu item now reads exactly like the screen it opens ("Device
configuration" opens Device configuration) and result windows inherit
the same name. Every sub-screen backs out via a "Back" row below a
blank separator (the config editor was missing both; its Close is now
Back, spelling out the discard when changes are staged), while the main
menu and device picker keep "Quit". Panel and dialog titles now wear a
brighter tint of their border colour via new title.* theme styles.

Color-code the chat picker rows: a contact's dot takes that person's
chat hue (filled once talked-to, hollow before), previews light their
sender names and @mentions in-hue, and a relative age column sits
between the unread badge and the message text.
Pin a grouped list's section heading to the top row once it scrolls off
(sticky header in the frame), add PageUp/PageDown to SelectScreen, and
drop arrow wraparound in the conversation picker so it doesn't jump
across the section dividers.
